Any person seeking admission to the Louisiana Bar shall apply to the Committee on Bar Admissions AND shall request that the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) prepare a character report.
Louisiana Law Students / Law Student Registrants
Law Student Registration - 2nd Year of Law School ($125)
Every prospective applicant for admission to the Louisiana Bar enrolled in law school in this state are required to participate in the Law Student Registration Program (LSR) in the fall of the second year of law school. At the same time, Louisiana law students must complete the online "NCBE Character Report Application" with the National Conference of Bar Examiners.
August 1 - October 1
Failure of Louisiana law students to complete Law Student Registration on time will result in a $300 fee, and the application will be processed by LASCBA and the NCBE as a First Time Applicant (FTA).
Please note that a supplemental 'Request for Preparation of a Character Report' with the NCBE and a Bar Examination Application is required to sit for the bar examination.
Bar Exam Application / Law Student Registrant Supplemental($750)
Law students who participated in the Law Student Registration Program in the fall of their second year of law school and are planning to sit for the upcoming exam will need to complete the following:
- Print and mail completed Bar Application along with signed and notarized Authorization and Release form.
- Print Dean Certification Form, sign and mail to your law school
- Complete the online "NCBE Character Report Application" with the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE); The online application allows you to copy data from your previous application and you will be eligible for a lower Supplemental character report fee.
February Exam: September 1 - November 1
July Exam: December 1 - February 1
Failure to complete the supplemental in time will result in a $750 late filing fee.
The Dean Certification Form is mailed directly to your law school and is due 45 days prior to the commencement of the bar examination. The form is included in the printed packet that is available after submission of a digital portion of the bar exam application.
Character and Fitness (Third Party Fees Apply)Supplemental Report
All applicants are also required to complete the online "NCBE Character Report Application" with the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE). If you are applying to sit for the bar examination and also previously applied as a law student registrant, the online application allows you to copy data from your previous application and you will be eligible for a lower Supplemental character report fee. Louisiana Specific Criminal Background Form
Additionally, applicants are required to undergo fingerprinting and a state and federal criminal background check which is due at the same time as the supplemental request for 'Preparation of Character Report' with the NCBE. The process can be initiated at the Louisiana State Police office or a local law enforcement agency. More information is available
Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) (Third Party Fees Apply)
All applicants are also required to score at least an 80 or higher on the MPRE exam. The MPRE is administered on the NCBE's behalf by the Law School Admission Council (LASC).
